I used to think that I was not cool enough to wear a leather jacket. But I’m starting to feel like I have that backwards. Maybe I don’t have to be cool enough – maybe by wearing a leather jacket I’ll automatically become cool. It’s all about perspective, right?

Before I go any further, quick leather jacket history lesson! They weren’t always the epitome of ultimate coolness – the leather jacket started as warm, durable outerwear for the military (think bomber jacket), their next step was as protective gear for motorcyclists. From there, they made their way to Hollywood, with the help of icons like Marlon Brando and James Dean.

And just like that – the leather jacket became synonymous with cool.

Big question is – although there is no doubt that leather jackets are cool – are they really a style building block?? Let’s reference my building block check list:

  1. It has to be timeless – They’ve been popular since the 50s, seems like a check!
  2. It has to be versatile – Marlon Brando AND Taylor Swift can both make it look good. That’s pretty versatile.

I guess that’s my whole checklist, timeless – check, versatile – check! Versatility is really key – to really be a building block a piece has to fit with many different styles. A leather jacket does that – it can be dressed up or down, can be girly, glamorous or very minimal.

My favorite jackets all seem to have some sort of quilted detail – I especially like when the quilting is on the sleeves. It gives them a slightly more feminine look, while still being badass.

Here are just a few that I have my eyes on right now, which style do you like?
