The Academy Awards // Fashion Nominees

Let’s cut to the chase here, on the surface the Oscar’s claim to be all about movies – but we all know the truth, they’re really about the fashion. And when it comes to big wins, the biggest always come on the red carpet. This year there are dozens of amazing gowns just dying to make the cut, dreaming of their moment in the spotlight, their shot at making the best best-dressed list. So, here we go – my nominees for the best dresses for the red carpet event of the year:

Jenny Packham
A favorite of my favorite, Princess Kate, Jenny Packham has some gorgeous, girly offerings for the red carpet. I can’t decide which of these looks I like best: the classic but bold crimson number, or one of the more playful nude-illusion looks, can you?
Marchesa
A staple of red carpet season, Marchesa always makes just about every best-dressed list, and with the gowns being offered-up here I can’t see this year being an exception. I love the idea of a mustard colored dress for the Oscars – it’s like liquid gold, like you melted an Oscar statue and decided to wear it, chic. Also, I’m pretty sure that if Meryl Davis was going she’d totally wear that middle look.
Prabal Gurung
Alright, here’s the deal. These are a little risky. But – just a little. Is a cut-out canceled out by a turtle neck? Maybe. Does that make it it more or less risque? Either way, that element of intrigue has me itching to see these beauties on the red carpet.
Elia Saab
Elie Saab has always designed show stoppers, some that are safe and others that have that Oscar edge. This white one-sleeved peplum look – perfection! A Fuchsia ball gown, where else are you going to wear that if it’s not to the Oscars??
Oscar de la Renta
Someone will always wear Oscar to the Oscars. Here are my 2014 nominees for the big night. I adore the playfulness of these 2 gowns. They still have a classic sophistication but they are also fun, and I think we should have a little more fun on the red carpet, because why not??
Monique Lhuillier
And the award for best drama goes to… these stunners. If (who am I kidding, WHEN) someone steps on to the red carpet in either of these she will instantly make every best dressed list. These are like the Titanic of dresses (b/c of all the Oscars Titanic won, not b/c of any ice bergs…). You can try to argue with me, but you will be wrong.
Armani Privé
These babies tend to be controversial because of their slightly over-the-top nature. But I think my selection here have some great potential – if styled correctly. Keep it simple and let the dress steal the show. I have a feeling that The Fashion Police will brand the dress on the right a “figure skating costume gone wrong” but I really thing that on the right person it could totally work. (That’s 2 figure skating references in 1 blog post, too much??)
So there you have it. Do you think any of these beauties will make the cut? Who do you think will wear them? (4 days until we find out!! eeeek!!)

NYFW // Nellie Partow

I tried to keep things low-key this Fashion Week (as you may have noticed from my lack of posting…) However, I’ve always had a deep love of the “up-and-coming” designer, the rather un-know name working to be a name. So I couldn’t pass up the invite to Nellie Partow‘s Fall presentation. (Style.com called her the “next big thing,”and for good reason!)

Her Fall collection is an effortless combination of soft feminism with menswear in a pretty palette of neutrals and pasteles. From cozy knits and flirty tops paired with perfectly tailored pants to chic shift dresses and a fur collared cape, the collection if full of totally wearable workwear.

So simple, so pretty. I’m obsessed.

What do you think? Check out her older collections here (all equally gorgeous!).

SAG Awards // Best Dressed

If the Golden Globe’s red carpet was all about metallic and neutrals the SAG awards were all about jewel tones. Bold, bright and GORGEOUS.  And there’s something I really love about how blues and greens look contrasted against the red of the carpet.

Golden Globes // Looks to Love

Question – is the caliber of red carpet looks declining? Or am I just getting harder to impress?
No one really stunned me at the Golden Globes last night. There were a lot of very pretty people – but no real WOWs. Maybe they’re all saving up to blow me away at the Oscars. (because, yes, all of Hollywood lives to impress ME, duh.)

Here’s Emma in Dior. A frequent member of the Hall of Chic, from the front she looks FAB, from the back things get a little WTF-ish. But there’s a part of me that really likes it anyway. Hey – it’s a risk isn’t it?

Michelle Dockery (always a red carpet favorite of mine) wore Oscar de la Renta, looked perfect. Does anything else need to be said about this lady??
And in the category for most surprising – Julianna Margulies looked amazing and Jennifer Lawrence confused me. (usually I would say the opposite…)

Who did you think looked best last night??

Springtime in Paris

Pretty pretty colors all over the Spring runways in Paris. Love these gorgeous combos of pasteles and poppy citruses.

Which combo do you like best?

New York Fashion Week // JOANNA MASTROIANNI

“The organic brilliant architecture of Gaudi is my vision for Spring 2014. My admiration for his innovative use of materials and engineering inspired me to create a flirty, seductive and playful collection. It was a labor of love to translate his great works of architecture into something feminine, contemporary and most importantly wearable.” – JOANNA MASTROIANNI

So I’ll admit, I’d never really paid attention to Joanna Mastroianni before I got the invite to her Spring show. But now? I am officially obsessed. Not only does she have a fluffy Pom that walks the runway at the end of her shows, but her collection is glamorous, yet funky (hello – chic and glamorous meet funky fresh!!!???!!) Adore.

Like she says in her quote, her Spring collection was inspired by the curvy and colorful architecture of Gaudi. If you haven’t seen his work – take a look – she totally nails it. Have I said I love it yet? I love it!

Elegance with attitude. Obsessed.

SALLY LAPOINTE // Backstage

Ready for another behind-the-scenes look at Fashion Week? Yay! OK – Here’s Sally LaPointe.
A lot of long, straight hair – let’s call it “Gothic-Chic”- prints inspired by dying flowers (yes, seriously) and gorgeous organza.
Check out those yellow dresses… LOVE.

DESIGUAL // Backstage

This is my 6th season covering NYFW (wait – how did THAT happen??) but it’s the very first season I’ve gone behind-the-scenes. It’s sort of amazing to watch the models come in and get transformed into the designer’s vision…

I loved the chance to be backstage at Desigual with Pantene* stylist Danilo. Here’s a little peek:

The polka-dots and that yellow jacket are my faves!

Fall Color Trends // Shades of Navy

There is one month left of Summer -which means I can really get serious with the Fall trend action! Last month we talked red, sticking with the primary theme, let’s move on to blue. Dark blue… or, Eclipse, Blueprint and Ink (to get technical) as seen from Marc by Marc Jacobs, Bill Blass, and Dior to name a few.

The best part about this – you probably already have tons of options in your closet to bring out for Fall. But if you feel like a little refresh, here are a few ideas!

Hello Gorgeous!

I used to be obsessed with purses – I had a whole wall of them, and would use a different one each day.
That was back in the days when I could spend under 20 bucks on a bag and feel like it was amazing.

Now that I’ve gotten all label conscious my purchases have been limited (by my bank account) but some of these beauties are really making me wish I had unlimited funds for bag-buying, especially with Fall speedily approaching.

one // two // three (obsessed with this one!) // four // five // six
Do you have a go-to bag year round, or do you practice the seasonal change-up?
