Style Stereotypes // French Girls

French-Style-1

They say that stereotypes exist for a reason, and that’s just as true when is comes to fashion as it does the rest of life. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule but as a whole, they can be pretty spot on.

For example, the always ever so chic French. (With icons like Coco Chanel, Francoise Hardy and Brigitte Bardot setting the stage, it’s hard to go wrong.)

French girls have a simple, effortless look that always has that – dare I say it – Je ne sais quoi. They go for simple and understated, but never sacrifice quality. They make casual, chic and they embrace the power of the flat.

Since they value quality over quantity, they invest in a lot of neutrals that easily mix and match (read: BLACK). They know what looks good – and they stick with it.

I bet they really love turtlenecks too.

Style Building Blocks // Turtlenecks

When I first had the idea for this post I thought it would be a quick look at a street style trend with the potential to become a style staple. Was I ever wrong. Somehow, I have blocked the relevance of the turtleneck from my mind. Until recently, the turtleneck only seemed appropriate on the cover of a 1990’s L.L. Bean catalog (or on the girls from the Mall Madness and Dream Phone boxes).

However – they are already all over my Pinterest boards (on style icons – including Kate Middleton!!, celebs, style bloggers) and always looking oh-so-chic. How have I disregarded such an important style element for so many years?!

  • Jackie O Style
  • Marilyn Black Turtleneck
  • Kate Middleton Style

Brief history of the turtleneck – apparently they first started showing up in the late 1800 as a base layer for athletes. Soon after the military adopted them as well. In the 1950s the black turtleneck became a style staple of the beatniks – making it synonymous with intellectuals and artists. But it didn’t go mainstream until Audrey Hepburn wore one in Funny Face. Since then, it has been worn but the chicest of the chic – Jackie O., Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and on and on. (See here for more).

I think it is safe to say the basic black turtleneck is a closet staple (and I need to buy one ASAP) but it goes beyond just that. Chunky knit turtlenecks in cream, grey and beige are what grabbed my attention in the first place.

And the true sign of a real wardrobe building block? How well it fits into all style types – it can play preppy, minimal or super girly.

Ra-Ra-Red

Color crush of the moment – RED. Spotting Allison Williams in this fab Naeem Khan frock really sealed the deal.

Ready to run out and buy a little red dress? Here are a few of my favorites:

Red Carpet Ready // 1

I spend a good amount of my time looking at celebrity fashion – at awards shows, movie premiers, parties etc. After a while a girl gets jealous of all those fancy designer frocks and decides to start a new blog series.
I call it: Red Carpet Ready. The idea is pretty simple – I pick a pretty dress and some accessories that I would wear if I had fancy events to attend. {Or if I just has unlimited funds with which to fill my closet.}

Here’s my first look – a floral fantasy. I’d wear it to a photo call, a fancy brunch – or perhaps for a talk show appearance. I’d keep the accessories simple and let the dress do most of the talking…

Simple Chic // Sexy Chic

Black & white will ALWAYS be chic, let’s face it… but these ladies are really rocking the look, head-to-toe. Olivia keeps it simple with a barley there make-up look and sleek hair style to compliment her LWD while Kristen vamps it up with a bolder look. And both of them look AMAZE.

Which look do you prefere? Oliva’s sweet look or Kristen’s sexy one?
